  • Dip. Clinical Hypnosis & Strategic Psychotherapy
  • Advanced Cert. Guiding and Teaching Meditation & Mindfulness
  • PhD, BA (Hons)
Dominic has over 15 years' experience helping adult learners boost their self-efficacy and achieve their goals through university courses focused on written and verbal communication, motivation and resilience. He remains a senior academic recognised for his empowering approach (e.g. Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning 2023).

Dominic has published extensive academic research on thriller and horror films, where anxieties come alive, especially on their intersection with cognitive and evolutionary psychology. Meditation and mindfulness led him to explore more experiential approaches to worry and uncertainty. He's committed to helping others step forward into the confident, focused, and peaceful life they deserve.

As well as a PhD in English, Dominic holds an Advanced Certificate in Guiding and Teaching Meditation and Mindfulness, and a Diploma of Clinical Hypnosis and Strategic Psychotherapy from the Institute of Applied Psychology, where he studied under Gordon Young, former president of the Hypnotherapy Council of Australia and the creator of Strategic Psychotherapy.

Dominic is a member of the International Institute for Complementary Therapists (IICT) and the International Strategic Psychotherapists Association (ISPA). He has contributed recordings to the Australian Centre for Meditation & Mindfulness subscription meditation library and published articles on mindfulness in The Mindful Word: Journal of Engaged Living.

Frequently Asked Questions

There are many overlaps between meditation and clinical hypnosis—e.g. both foster a relaxed state of heightened awareness and mental flexibility. But they also differ in their techniques and goals.

Meditation takes different forms but often encourages us to practise relinquishing intentions—permitting thoughts, sensations and emotions to come and go with an accepting and detached mindset (entering meditation with a particular ‘goal’ in mind is a recipe for struggle!). It may also foster realisations about the boundaries between ourselves and others or the world around us.

Clinical hypnosis or hypnotherapy resembles guided meditation in its emphasis on relaxation, absorption and awareness. Like many meditations, it typically uses imagery to encourage relaxation. However, as a type of therapy, clinical hypnosis amplifies our mental clarity and creativity and directs them toward achieving particular goals. How this occurs varies from person to person: clinical hypnosis sessions involve detailed preliminary discussion so that problems can be clarified and the approach tailored to you and your desired outcome.

Along with its ‘meditative’ elements, modern hypnosis draws on techniques from cognitive behaviour therapy, positive psychology, and strategic therapy to uncover neglected inner strengths and drive an empowering and practical approach to achieving your goals.

No. Meditation practices are found in various religious traditions, but we take a secular approach. This approach is, however, compatible with diverse spiritual beliefs—everyone is warmly welcomed.

Some private health cover providers enable hypnotherapy to be claimed under Extras. We encourage you to check with your provider.

It depends. Many people benefit from hypnotherapy for behaviours harmful to physical health, such as smoking or exercise avoidance. As a type of psychological therapy, clinical hypnosis is focused on mental rather than direct physical interventions (although in the scientific research community there is significant interest in the relationship between mental and physical health outcomes).

Hypnotherapy can also be beneficial for managing the anxiety and suffering wrapped up in chronic pain. However, if you are experiencing physical pain, consult with your GP in the first due to the risk of underlying physical conditions. Once these possibilities have been explored, ask your GP whether clinical hypnosis may be suitable for pain management in your situation.

At this stage, hypnotherapy is offered online only (via Zoom). Please see Hypnotherapy under Services for more information.

Glide Acuity provides modern clinical hypnosis in the Ericksonian tradition (specifically Neo-Ericksonian hypnosis).

Many people think of hypnosis as a kind of ‘mind control’, following what they’ve seen on movies and TV shows. However, modern hypnosis is highly invitational. You are not unconscious throughout, and the therapist doesn’t ‘take control’ of you. Really, the purpose is to provide you with a greater sense of control over your own thinking, your choices, and ultimately your life.

Glide Acuity does not offer hypnosis to retrieve repressed memories or details of past lives. These practices are not supported by professional associations or insurers due to the risk of false memory creation.

No. While content can be produced more efficiently using AI, we prioritise things a little differently.

Glide Acuity services focus on mindfulness, focus and the breadth of human experience. They focuses on recognising our human selves and our potential. We don’t feel the use of AI is appropriate in this context, and all services, both online and in-person, are authentically human-to-human.
